Layered Bow

This tying style creates a soft, layered bow at the neck, similar to a jabot. It works best with a 90 × 90 cm square silk scarf.

What you will need

  • a 90 × 90 cm square silk scarf
  • a small, thin elastic band
  • Time: about 2 minutes

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Fold the scarf. Fold it diagonally into a triangle. Keep one point offset by about one third so it can hang in the centre later.
  2. Create the pleats. Starting at one side point, gather the scarf into even folds between two fingers. Continue through the centre towards the other side.
  3. Secure the centre. Fasten the gathered section with a small elastic band. Leave the two side points free and the centre point hanging down.
  4. Shape the bow. Take the centre point, pass it between the gathered sections and pull it backwards. Gently shake out the scarf and open the folds.
  5. Tie the scarf. Place it around your neck with the gathered section at the front. Tie the two ends securely at the back.
  6. Finish the shape. Let the centre point fall down and use your fingers to arrange the folds into a soft jabot.

Tip

Do not tighten the elastic too firmly, as this can crease the silk. If the bow drops while you wear it, move the knot at the back closer to your neck.
